The Status of Artificial Intelligence

The term "Artificial Intelligence" was first used in 1956, AI is now more widely used as a result of increased data volumes, sophisticated algorithms, and advancements in storage and processing power.

In the 1950s, problem-solving and symbolic methods were subjects of early AI research. The US Department of Defense became interested in this kind of work in the 1960s and started teaching computers how to think like people do. In the 1970s, for instance, street mapping projects were completed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Additionally, intelligent personal assistants were developed by DARPA in 2003, long before Siri, Alexa, or Cortana were well-known brands.

The automation and formal reasoning that we see in computers today, such as decision support systems and smart search systems that can be designed to complement and enhance human abilities, were made possible by this early work.

The current evolution of AI technologies isn't nearly as scary or as intelligent as what is depicted in Hollywood films and science fiction novels as human-like

robots that take over the world. Instead, AI has developed to offer numerous specific advantages to every sector. Continue reading for current applications of artificial intelligence in retail, healthcare, and other sectors.
